Arizona Alcoholism Treatment Center

So, what do you think the problem with Lindsay Lohan is? That is the question they asked me when I was on television last week. First, I think our media may have a problem in that they do not understand what addiction is. I think they want the answer to be simple-kind of like when Nancy Reagan said "Just say no". Do fancy expensive treatment centers work? Yes. Do low budget inexpensive halfway houses work? Yes. They will all work IF we work it! So if Lindsay comes to a Arizona alcoholism treatment center, she will do just fine as long as she is willing. You can do it, girl!

Phoenix alcoholism treatment program: Working the 10th Step

"Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it"

How do we work this step?

Well, studying the Big Book with the aid of Joe and Charlie tapes we could conclude that by working the 10th step we are inherently working steps 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 every minute.

Here is how they break it down:

"This thought brings us to Step Ten, which suggests we continue to take personal inventory and continue to set right any new mistakes as we go along. We vigorously commenced this way of living as we cleaned up the past. We have entered the world of the Spirit. Our next function is to grow in understanding and effectiveness. This is not an overnight matter. It should continue for our lifetime.

Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear (4th Step). When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them (6th and 7th). We discuss them with someone immediately (5th step) and make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone (8th and 9th). Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help. Love and tolerance of others is our code.

(I love the 10th step promises).

And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone, even alcohol. For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes! That is the miracle of it. We are not fighting it, neither are we avoiding temptation. We feel as though we had been placed in a position of neutrality safe and protected. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. That is how we react so long as we keep in fit spiritual condition.

(A warning though).

It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe. We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God's will into all of our activities. "How can I best serve Thee, Thy will (not mine) be done." These are thoughts which must go with us constantly. We can exercise our will power along this line all we wish. It is the proper use of the will.

Much has already been said about receiving strength, inspiration, and direction from Him who has all knowledge and power. If we have carefully followed directions, we have begun to sense the flow of His Spirit into us. To some extent we have become God-conscious. We have begun to develop this vital sixth sense. But we must go further and that means more action."

Phoenix Alcoholism & Alcohol Abuse Afflicts 30% of Population

Phoenix alcoholismDespite over a hundred years of research and scores of potential treatments, alcoholism remains America's most common addiction and the most notoriously difficult to overcome.

According to a new study released this in July by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, more than thirty percent of American adults have abused alcohol at some point in their lives or suffer from alcoholism.

The same study says that only 25% of those afflicted received any treatment. And other studies show that, at best, only a small percentage of those who seek treatment manage to abstain from alcohol for a year.

"Alcohol problems are not just something that affects Hollywood stars," said Dr. Robert Swift, a psychiatrist at Brown University who specializes in alcoholism. "We're talking about a chronic, relapsing condition. And we still have a long way to go in treatment. It's like treatment of cancer-some people can be helped but others just cannot."

Science is learning that alcoholism, like addiction to narcotics, causes permanent changes to the brain that can never be permanently undone.

"Once you become an alcoholic or a drug addict, you can't go back," said Swift. "It's something that becomes a chronic illness. So the idea that you go through rehab and you're cured is really kind of a ridiculous idea. You wouldn't expect that with diabetes, so why do people expect it with alcoholism?"

The scientific findings, in turn, have begun to change the popular perception of alcoholism as a mere failure of will on the part of the drinker to stop drinking.

"The first drink may be volitional, but after one becomes addicted, it becomes a compulsion," said Ann Bradley, spokeswoman for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. "Although we're always to be held responsible for our actions and their outcome, it's pretty fair to say that the most addictive drinking is well outside the control of the drinker."

Crossroads has been treating Phoenix alcoholism problems for decades. They run both men’s and women’s recovery centers and have recently opened a Phoenix methamphetamine treatment residence too. Crossroads helps those suffering from addiction to never regard themselves as "cured," just in a state of ongoing recovery or remission.

Restoration

"Step 2: We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. "

For most of us, life's progression while in our alcoholism was destruction. Destruction to family, those closest to us, those we didn't even know, and most of all to ourselves. In one way or another, many of us wake up one day to realize that we are living like an animal. How true this is depends on the nature of our alcoholism.

Step 2 has provided a way for us to be restored to life. Restored to a manner of living that we can love, respect, and enjoy for 24 hours. I was reminded of this when life was insane and I found myself living lower than I have ever been before. I remembered when I had a home, a job, and people around me respected me for who I was, not what I could be. When I realized or even came to believe in God (a power greater than myself) could restore me to sanity, I realized for once in my life that things could be better.

To know what it is like to struggle with the effects of addiction and the absolute craziness it can bring to my life, it is truly a miracle that I am here to even write about it. The past month or so I was feeling the despair of the cares of life and wondering if there really is any way out of the insanity of my current circumstance. Could I really overcome what I deemed impossible odds without the help of a God? That is when I needed to remember if I believed that there is a power greater than myself besides the group of AA, then I had some faith that things in the beginning could get better. So I needed to find the faith that I used to overcome my hopelessness of mind and body, to overcome my current situations.

Faith is a mysterious commodity. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. It takes faith to believe in a power greater than myself, it takes faith to work a program, it takes faith to work the steps, and it takes faith to LIVE a program for my very life. In an awesome way it is comforting that it only takes a little, the size of a mustard seed, to work in the most powerful ways to restore a peaceful life.

"So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making. They arise out of ourselves, and the alcoholic is an extreme example of self-will run riot, though he usually doesn’t think so. Above everything, we alcoholics must be rid of this selfishness. We must, or it kills us! God makes that possible. And there often seems no way of entirely getting rid of self without His aid. Many of us had moral and philosophical convictions galore, but we could not live up to them even though we would have liked to. Neither could we reduce our self-centeredness much by wishing or trying on our own power. We had to have God's help... God was going to be our Director. He is the Principal; we are His agents. He is the Father, and we are His children. Most Good ideas are simple, and this concept was the keystone of the new and triumphant arch through which we passed to freedom." page 62, Big Book of AA.

I know that right now, this moment, I have situations facing me that from the outside look impossible. Family, career, & financial are just to name a few. It would be so easy for me to just allow these circumstances steal my peace, serenity, hope, & faith. A week ago, that was almost the case. When I was ready to give up and just walk away, like a good care taker the Creator held onto me when I could not do it for myself. I am blessed in this life, this day. I'm alive for a specific reason; to live and enjoy the beauty that any day can bring. There was a time when I didn't care what the day looked like or even felt like. I wanted to numb myself to all feelings. Today I have the strength, guidance, and courage of the Creator! I am very determined to enjoy my life on a daily basis; moment by moment. When God looks at me he measures my heart not my head.

Sorrow looks back, worry looks around, and faith looks up.

Phoenix alcoholics anonymous meetings: There is A Solution

From the forward to second edition, we could conclude that: when the 1st edition of Alcoholics Anonymous was published in 1939, there were just a few AA groups. The first one was at Akron, Ohio and the second in New York and in 1937, a third at Cleveland.

"Besides these, there were scattered alcoholics who had picked up the basic ideas in Akron or New York who were trying to form groups in other cities. "

Bill W while working on the 1st edition, intuitively knew (9th step promise) that we alcoholics have a tendency of looking for a buzz at once, tend to arrive at a conclusion swiftly.

So, In the chapter "There is a Solution" (page 17), Bill W starts off, describing the first power, namely, the power of the Fellowship, using the analogy of survivors of a ship-wreck. But quickly he points out that the fellow-ship is not the real solution:

"The feeling of having shared in a common peril is one element in the powerful cement which binds us. But that in itself would never have held us together as we are now joined. The tremendous fact for every one of us is that we have discovered a common solution. We have a way out on which we can absolutely agree, and upon which we can join in brotherly and harmonious action. This is the great news this book carries to those who suffer from alcoholism" (Not the news of the Fellow-ship)
He also, intuitively knew that, people might have trouble distinguishing a 'real alcoholic' from other kind of drinkers.

For whom is the book addressed to?

To moderate Drinkers? No.
To hard Drinkers? No.

It is addressed to a Real Alcoholic.

"The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost the power of choice in drink. Our so called will power becomes practically nonexistent. We are unable, at certain times, to bring into our consciousness with sufficient force the memory of the suffering and humiliation of even a week or a month ago. We are without defense against the first drink."

"The alcoholic may say to himself in the most casual way, "It won't burn me this time, so here's how!" Or perhaps he doesn't think at all. How often have some of us begun to drink in this nonchalant way, and after the third or fourth, pounded on the bar and said to ourselves, "For God's sake, how did I ever get started again?" Only to have that thought supplanted by "Well, I'll stop with the sixth drink." Or "What's the use anyhow?"

When this sort of thinking is fully established in an individual with alcoholic tendencies, he has probably placed himself beyond human aid, and unless locked up, may die or to permanently insane. These stark and ugly facts have been confirmed by legions of alcoholics throughout history. But for the grace of God, there would have been thousands more convincing demonstrations. So many want to stop but cannot."

Then on Page 25 he describes the real solution (He repeats the Title of the Chapter here).

"There is a solution

The great fact is just this, and nothing less: That we have had deep and effective spiritual experiences which have revolutionized our whole attitude toward life, toward our fellows and toward God's universe. The central fact of our lives today is the absolute certainty that our Creator has entered into our hearts and lives in a way which is indeed miraculous. He has commenced to accomplish those things for us which we could never do by ourselves."

Further on, he offers clear-cut directions (in chapters: How it works, Into Action, Working with others) showing how the 1st 100 Alcoholics recovered.

Arizona Alcoholism Treatment Center - 12 Steps of AA embedded in Bills Story

The basic intent of writing the book Alcoholic Anonymous was primarily to show PRECISELY how Bill W and the first 100 Alcoholics recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. If you watch each story carefully, the theme would be consistent. Introduction to the character, how and what went through the mind of the main player and gets hooked to Alcohol. And how the key figure loses control of liquor consumption and becomes powerless. Eventually the story would illustrate how they recovered from Alcoholism.

Though all stories follow the same pattern, Bill's Story demonstrates the working of the 12 steps of AA by Bill W (In Towns hospital).

(I do not want to take too much of space here, but want to highlight the key parts of Bills' journey prior to hitting the 'bottom'):

In the midst of the excitement I discovered liquor. I forgot the strong warnings and the prejudices of my people concerning drink......

Drink was taking an important and exhilarating part in my life.....

The remonstrances of my friends terminated in a row and I became a lone wolf...

Gradually things got worse
...

Gin would fix that. So two bottles, and Oblivion.

And finally he admits he is powerless:

Step 1:
No words can tell of the loneliness and despair I found in that bitter morass of self-pity. Quicksand stretched around me in all directions. I had met my match. I had been overwhelmed. Alcohol was my master.

Step 2:
My friend suggested what then, seemed a novel idea. He said, "Why don't you choose your own conception of God?"

It was only a matter of being willing to believe in a Power greater than myself. Nothing more was required of me to make my beginning. I saw that growth could start from that point. Upon a foundation of complete willingness I might build what I saw in my friend.

Step 3:
There I humbly offered myself to God, as I then I understood Him, to do with me as He would. I placed myself unreservedly under His care and direction. I admitted for the first time that of myself I was nothing; that without Him I was lost.

Step 4:
I ruthlessly faced my sins and became willing to have my new-found Friend (God) take them away, root and branch (Step 6 and 7).

Step 5:
My schoolmate visited me, and I fully acquainted him with my problems and deficiencies.

Step 8:
We made a list of people I had hurt or toward whom I felt resentment. I expressed my entire willingness to approach these individuals, admitting my wrong. Never was I to be critical of them. I was to right all such matters to the utmost of my ability. (After leaving the Hospital completes Step 9)

Step 10:
I was to test my thinking by the new God-consciousness within. Common sense would thus become uncommon sense.

Step 11:
I was to sit quietly when in doubt, asking only for direction and strength to meet my problems as He would have me. Never was I to pray for myself, except as my requests bore on my usefulness to others. Then only might I expect to receive. But that would be in great measure.

Step 12:
My friend (Ebby T) promised when these things were done I would enter upon a new relationship with my Creator (Spiritual Awakening).

He also had emphasized the absolute necessity of demonstrating these principles in all my affairs. Particularly was it imperative to work with others as he had worked with me. Faith without works was dead, he said. And how appallingly true for the alcoholic! For if an alcoholic failed to perfect and enlarge his spiritual life through work and self-sacrifice for others, he could not survive the certain trials and low spots ahead. If he did not work, he would surely drink again, and if he drank, he would surely die. Then faith would be dead indeed. With us it is just like that.

(Irony is Ebby was full of resentment (that he was not considered as one of the founders of AA) and never followed through and struggled rest of his life).

By GOD'S grace, i landed upon Joe and Charlie Big Book Study tapes early on in my recovery. They were recorded in 1998 in a Workshop at Laughlin, Nevada. Studying the Big Book with those tapes greatly helped me understand the program. There are several web-sites that carry them. This is the one I visit frequently.

Phoenix Alcoholism Treatment Center - Do You Need It? Pt. 4

Take a look at this poor guy. He's not like the others. At a party he goes on a spree and exceeds the norms for even that environment. He winds up making a fool of himself and going even beyond that into anesthesia. Surgery could probably be performed on this guy and he wouldn't wake up. Did you know that alcohol and ether share almost identical chemical compositions? In the American Civil War, when they ran out of ether, they would get the wounded drunk before putting them under the knife. But you have to drink a LOT to become like this guy above.

Everybody else at the party had fun and left with their girlfriends (or boyfriends) except this guy. He wound the punchline of the party. The buffoon. The fool. No girl for this guy, they've scrawled "Gay Pride" across his chest. What nice friends he has. He's marked as "different" now.

Are you tired of being the punchline? The buffoon? The fool? There is a way out. If you live in Arizona, Crossroads is a fantastic Phoenix Alcoholism Treatment Center. It's a great place to attend Phoenix AA Meetings too. You can get your life back together.

Arizona Alcoholism Recovery - Drunk Man Art

arizona alcoholism recoveryI found this piece of art on Google and I think that it captures the phenomenon of craving and loss of control experienced by an alcoholic perfectly. This is what makes us different from the rest of the population; we have a physical allergy to alcohol coupled with an obsession of the mind. This is why the first drink gets us drunk.

If you're looking for Arizona alcoholism recovery Crossroads is a great place. Tell 'em that you read about them on the blog! You CAN reclaim your life and dignity.

Crossroads is the place that hosts the most Phoenix AA Meetings. They also have plenty of Phoenix NA Meetings. The coffee is strong and free. The message is real. After the meeting you can go sit in the courtyard and talk.

Phoenix Narcotics Anonymous Meetings

I am in Portland today and I am just thinking about how great sober living is. I went to a Narcotics Anonymous last night with my son, and it was just the same as a Phoenix Narcotics Anonymous meeting. It is cool to know that no matter where I am on this planet I can probably find a meeting and be with other people I can identify with. It is also fun sharing sobriety with my son. Many times at Crossroads I run into guys who share addiction with their parents, and I find that deal especially horrifying. Sharing a meeting with my son is much cooler than sharing a needle. Today I am grateful for the fellowship that exists almost everywhere-and for another day of sobriety for both my son and me.

Phoenix Alcohol Rehab - Do You Need It? Pt. 3

Here's poor Poor David Hasselhoff drunk on the floor and eating Wendy's. It appears that he's being cared for by his daughter. It's horrible what we alcoholics do to those that love us. The daughter is obviously filming it for a reason and how it ended up on YouTube is anybodies' guess but it's hair raising.

If you need Phoenix alcohol rehab Crossroads is a great place to get it. They'd whip David Hasselhoff right into shape!

Phoenix Alcoholics AnonymousThe Crossroads, Sober360, Blog is proud to begin a series of images showing individuals who might have a drinking problem. It's not how much, or what, the alcoholic drinks but what happens to the alcoholic when they drink. The pictures in this ongoing series demonstrate a loss of control. Maybe these folks should think about attending Phoenix Alcoholics Anonymous meetings! Either that or get new friends because look at what their friends did to them while they were drunk!

Phoenix Alcoholics Anonymous - You Kill Me

I saw a good move this weekend: You Kill Me. It starred Ben Kingsley and Tia Leone. Ben Kingsley plays a hit man for the mob up in Buffalo, New York. He has a horrible drinking problem. He misses an important "hit" because he was passed out drunk.

They drag him before the Godfather and he tells him that he has to sober up. The Godfather sends him to San Francisco to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Phoenix Alcoholics Anonymous attendees will recognize many of the same characters. People who have gone through Arizona alcoholism treatment will identify with much in this film.

It's a dark comedy about a man trying to get his life back together with AA so he can keep his job: killing people. This movie is funny as shit and we Phoenix alcoholics can sure identify with it.

Phoenix drug addictions

I went to Walmart the other day to buy a can of spray paint. You would think that this was a very innocent act on my part, wouldn't you? Low and behold, the spray paint was locked up behind a glass door. I had to ask an attendant with a key to come and open it for me. When I asked the attendant what the problem was-he informed me that addicts were using the spray paint to get high. There seems to be new Phoenix drug addictions every day. What will be next? Then I thought about my own life, and even though I am 13 years clean and sober, I seem to be addicted to ice cream. Not quite as outlandish as spray paint, but I wonder.....is my problem with ice cream the same kind of problem as other people have with spray paint? I'll bet spray paint has less calories!

Phoenix Narcotics Anonymous Meetings at Crossroads

Phoenix Narcotics Anonymous MeetingsCrossroads is a great place to attend Phoenix Twelve Step Recovery Meetings. Not only do they have one of the largest schedules of Arizona Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings but they also host many Phoenix Narcotics Anonymous Meetings as well. And for the families of Phoenix Alcoholics they have plenty of Phoenix Al-Anon meetings.

The meetings are big, the people friendly and the coffee strong. They usually have stuff to eat too. Because it's at a Phoenix alcoholism treatment center they welcome us. You can also see plenty of the residents to talk to and help "keep it green".

Arizona alcoholism recovery

I just listened to my sponsor share at a Crossroads meeting. He was celebrating 27 years of sobriety today! You might think his message about Arizona alcoholism recovery would be complicated, involve lots of Psychiatry, medications, whatever. But his message was one of simple action-go to lots of meetings, work with a sponsor, help others, and lead a good life. Many newcomers at the meeting just shook their head because they had a hard time believing recovery could be so simple. Isn't it just our nature to want the answer to be so complicated? I am grateful today that I understand the nature of my problem, and more importantly I have a clear idea of the solution.

Arizona Alcoholic's Anonymous - Perfect Stepwork?

My name is Robin and I am an alcoholic. I heard a speaker today, Joe at the Scottsdale Fellowship, that said all that's asked is that we do the 12 Steps of Alcoholic's Anonymous to the best of our ability. Is the first step perfect? Is the second step perfect? What about doing a "perfect" fourth step? We just don't drink or drug and go through the AA Steps to the best of our ability. It's about progress and not perfection. It's about living a sober life. Alcoholics Anonymous is a tool to do that.

I'd like to say that I'm enjoying this Sober 360 Blog. Crossroads is a great Phoenix alcoholism treatment center and they have great Arizona Alcoholic's Anonymous meetings. I'm glad to be helping export their message of Phoenix alcoholism recovery and Arizona drug addiction recovery via this Blog. It's good to be alive.

Check out the above video. It helps explain some things.

Phoenix Drug and Alcohol Treatment

I just finished reading some incredible statistics. At all Crossroads facilities, meth addiction is almost as prevalent as alcohol addiction. This is shocking considering that meth has not been around for all that many years. Much like alcohol back in the day of Prohibition, there is someone in almost every neighborhood that is mixing this stuff up in their basement. It is fast, easy and cheap to produce. It does not have to be grown in a foreign country. It is available everywhere. Almost everyone entering a Phoenix drug and alcohol treatment has at least tried it.

Phoenix AA Meetings

What can I tell you but that one of the most important moments in my life was when my boss, the owner of the company walked into my office and said, "Maurice, I'll be back around 11:30 to get you for lunch and to take you with me to one of my Phoenix aa meetings." It literally changed my life that day and is still changing my life. I had always respected my boss but then on that special day I came to truly see that he vibrated on a higher frequency and held a higher state of sobriety that epitomized what is meant when you have to give it away to keep it. Now my prime objective is to attend as many Phoenix alcoholics anononymous meetings as I can and take comfort knowing that Arizona alcoholics anonymous meetings doors are always open to me.

My colleague Robin encourages me to do the deal; read the big book, do the steps and get a sponsor and talk to him daily. And my sponsor has shared with me that if things get too difficult don't be afraid to attend a Phoenix alcoholism treatement program. So I must admit I was a little relunctant at first because for some reason I thought it was a lot to do but now looking back after conversations with my boss and Robin I've realized that that's little or nothing to do at all compared to saving my life.

Arizona Alcohol Drug Treatment

Do you ever wonder why there are more and more people who suffer from addiction? Why with all of our technology, scientific and medical advances, and some really smart people thinking about this problem-why do we seem to keep going backwards? Every week I read in the newspaper that there is a new pill that will finally "cure" this problem and there will be no more need to alcohol or drug treatment in Arizona, or anywhere else for that matter. With all the complicated theories and medical cures, at this point in time it appears the simple approach is still the most effective.

12-step meetings, behavior modification, adding in responsibility and accountability-these are the things that really do work, and have worked over the course of time. Until someone can prove differently, these are the optimal tools to rely upon.

"Therefore nothing can matter more to the future welfare of AA than the manner in which we use this colossus of communication. Used unselfishly and well, the results can surpass present imagination."

Phoenix Alcoholics Anonymous - A Spiritual Analysis

Phoenix Alcoholics AnonymousMy name is Robin and I am an alcoholic. I am not a Christian. I never was. My parents were free-thinkers and intellectuals and I was raised outside the church. I've never been to church in my life. My dad was a WWII combat veteran who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder; he didn't believe in God. As a young child, I asked my dad why we didn't go to church and he replied: "I am raising you pagan." I went to school and told them I was being raised a pagan; this was Iowa, forty years ago.

I celebrated ten years clean-and-sober last month. As my sobriety has evolved, I have been coming to grips with the spiritual aspect of the AA program. Over this last ten years I have been, slowly, moving toward a spiritual awakening. I'm not there yet but I'm going to talk about some of my progression.

Alcoholics Anonymous was born out of the quest for a spiritual experience. It was used as a tool to try and bring about, what was known as a "vital spiritual experience". It was thought that this "vital spiritual experience" was the only way to rid the demon-rum from those afflicted. This stemmed from an encounter that an alcoholic, named Rowland Hazard had with (even then) world-famous Psychiatrist Dr. Carl Gustav Jung in 1931. Hazard had traveled all the way to Switzerland seeking treatment from Jung.

On page twenty-six of the Big Book was an excerpt from Dr. Jung's own notes regarding Rowland Hazard:
"For years he had floundered from one sanitarium to another. He had consulted the bestknown American psychiatrists."

Upon treating Mr. Hazard Jung concluded that Rowland's insatiable drinking stemmed from a lack of spirituality in his life or his seeking a spiritual experience. This is illustrated from a quote by Jung in a 1961 letter to Bill W.:
"His craving for alcohol was the equivalent, on a low level, of the spiritual thirst of our being for wholeness, expressed in medieval language: the union with God."

Dr. Jung told Rowland Hazard that his affliction was untreatable by his methods but suggested that he seek a "spiritual experience". Jung told him to go to church. This reminds me of the film, The Exorcist, where the best doctors in Boston tell Regan's mother to go to a church. Apparently, Rowland Hazard was willing to go to any lengths because he went back to the United States and joined the Oxford Group.

The Oxford Group was a Christian fellowship that believed in taking action to "wipe the slate clean" of an individual's life so as to allow for a spiritual experience to occur. They had Ten Steps that the person followed to accomplish that. Rowland dove into this and stopped drinking. Rowland's story is the key to the beginnings of AA.

It was in 1934 that Rowland Hazard was at home in Shaftsbury, VT. There he learned of a man, named Ebby Thatcher, sentenced to six months in jail for repeated drunkenness. This is the famous "Ebby T." out of Bill's Story. Mr. Hazard went before the Judge and petitioned to have Ebby bound over to him. Rowland then took Ebby T. to New York City for "treatment". This was how Ebby "got religion" and carried the message to Bill W.

Much has been written about Ebby's interaction with Bill and the start of Alcoholics Anonymous. However, not much is known about Rowland's and Bill's relationship. It is certain that they knew each other. It is thought that Rowland Hazard was the one that gave Bill a copy of William James', The Varieties of Religious Experience.

I've done things like inject cocaine and take powerful liquid LSD. Was it because I was seeking a spiritual experience? Was it because I was lacking a connection with the Divine in my life?

One problem that I have with the Judean-Christian belief system is that (to me) it seems really caught up in getting inside your mind. They want to know what you're thinking. Not only that but you should be consumed with guilt over having "impure thoughts".

If the Jews and Christians are so worried about what's rattling around in my mind where are the rules? Where is the darn guidebook? Some people might say that this is the Ten Commandments; we have the Ten Commandments.

We do not "have" the Ten Commandments. The Bible itself states that the Ten Commandments are impossible to follow because we are already guilty. We have this thing know as "original sin" dogging us down. It is impossible for us to follow the Ten Commandments because of it. Therefore, God had to come down himself and be born as a man. This man (Jesus Christ), took upon himself all of the punishment in the world for our original sin; the failure to follow God's original directive. All we need to do is recognize Christ for this and we are "saved". Look man, I don't want to be "saved" when I die. I want to stop drinking and drugging in this life. I want to live a good life now.

I think that the basic flaw for me here is that it assumes that intent always precedes action; one must *think* a thought before one can act upon it. Under this, when a person asks: "How do I be a righteous person?" the answer is always: "Think righteous thoughts." My question is how do I "think righteous thoughts" if I haven't a friggin' clue? To me, it's crazy.

Other belief systems, not based upon the Judean-Christian model, don't see intent always preceding action. These would be some of the Eastern religions and "primitive" belief systems of the hunter-gatherer societies. They see action as bringing about intent, or new thought. Under these belief systems when asked: "How do I be a righteous person?" they might reply: "You see how a righteous person acts, act like that." This makes complete sense to me. I am not going to *think* my way into the Kingdom of Heaven; I am going to act my way into it.

However it happened, Rowland Hazard tapped into a belief system that was based upon taking action. This was transferred to Ebby Thatcher who gave it to Bill W. When I attend Phoenix Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in 2007, it blows my mind how it all began.

"Therefore nothing can matter more to the future welfare of AA than the manner in which we use this colossus of communication. Used unselfishly and well, the results can surpass present imagination."

Meth Rehab Phoenix Arizona

There is a new meth rehab program in Phoenix Arizona, at the Crossroads Midtown facility at 3702 North 13th Avenue. The program was funded in part by a grant from St. Luke's Health Initiatives. As Director of Crossroads, I am very excited about the potential to help stem the plague of methamphetamine in the city of Phoenix. The program is set up a little differently than other existing Crossroads programs. It is based on the premis that people coming off methamphetamine use need at least 21 days of rest, meetings, groups, and good nutrition. After the initial 21 day period, the residents of this program are mainstreamed into the regular Crossroads program, where they are required to get a job and participate in a 12 step meeting daily. The initial results of this program are very encouraging. We believe this type of low cost programming, which is available to all different economic classes, is the start of the answer on how to approach this difficult problem.
